Will my Cockapoo get along with my cat?

On the whole yes!

Will your cat like the dog is another question. Cockpoos are very friendly, playful and love company. A cat is just that to him, a play mate.

Cats on the other hand are independent, sometimes solitary animals, set in their own ways. The outcome may be determined on which animal is introduced to which. A long standing cat in his environment of people and coming and going as they please may not take kindly to a big ball of playfulness entering his domain.

When introducing them make sure the dog is crated or a least on a lead. Quick interactions at first then gradually increase the time they are in the same room. This may take days, it may take weeks. When they both seem OK with each other the lead can come off. I would not leave them alone together in a confined space under any circumstances, always make sure the cat can get away.

Pets that are used to socialising can adjust very quickly to the new addition. If you are having trouble, and there is no progress after a few weeks, you could enlist an animal behaviourist.

One of the most important things to remember is to never punish either animal because it won’t solve the problem and could make the situation worse.
